I’m Engaged and Going to Make My Own Wedding Dress!

I have been sitting on some exciting news for over a month now, but it’s time to announce that Matt and I have gotten engaged! He proposed in the most amazing and perfect way, in my garden, at dusk, with a ring attached to a garden gnome. It was a beautiful Friday evening and he lured me out to the garden, under the guise of picking snap peas for a salad. He even had champagne hidden behind one of the feed troughs, for when I inevitably said yes. After a few days of simply relishing the moment, we started talking details. One of the first things that came to my…

    Makers Market Recap

It’s been an exciting time over here at Rake and Make HQ! So exciting that this blog post was scheduled for last week and got missed. Makers Market was such a well put together and fun event, that I have to still blog about it, even it if it is a wee bit late. For those of you that missed my post announcing this event, Makers Market was a neighborhood craft fair of sorts, featuring local artisans, and took place at White Center’s own Center Studio. Flower and I shared a table, thank goodness, because with the birth of my lovely new nephew, I got a little behind on making stuff. My…

    Blogger’s Summer Camp

I am starting to realize how many cool things I discover via Seattleite Megan Reardon of the blog Not Martha. Through posts on Not Martha, I have discovered the Colette Sewing Handbook, Go Mighty (I really want to go to Camp Mighty now) and most recently, Blogger’s Summer Camp. I may sound like a bit of a super fan of Megan, but I have to give credit, where credit is due. I subscribe to Not Martha on Bloglovin’, so I was intrigued when I saw that she was going to be a panelist at an event called Blogger’s Summer Camp. What sold it for me, was that it was going to be here in Seattle,…

I’m really excited to be a part of this event as Center Studio is such a great space and their classes are awesome too. So come support Flower…

A Gray Ribbed Scarf for Mother’s Day

With my mom being so sick this past year, it has been a roller coaster ride of a year. My mother has proven to be one tough cookie though. She had a rough go over the winter. As a result of the liver disease, she had pneumonia twice and several bouts of hepatic encephalopathy, where she was confused, sometimes to the point of unresponsiveness. I am (and I think the doctors are too) surprised and impressed by how well she is doing health-wise and how gracefully she is accepting HUGE changes in her life. I hope if, and when, I am faced with a serious illness like my mother’s, that I will…

    Baby Shower on a Budget!

I’d never been a part of planning a baby shower before, so when I was recently asked to help with decorations for one, I turned to Pinterest for inspiration. Pinterest is great for party planning, as you can make a “secret board” that only people you invite can see. This way, I could pin inspiration to “Traci’s Baby Shower”, invite the people who were helping plan the shower and then Traci (who follows me on Pinterest), would not be able to see what we were planning. It’s brilliant and so helpful. I’ve made the board public now, since the event is over, if anyone wants to take a look. My friend, Val, and…

An Interview with Sarai Mitnick of Colette Patterns

The The Colette Sewing Handbook played a huge part in me learning how to sew. The first three garments I ever made were the first three patterns in the handbook, the Meringue skirt, Pastille dress and Truffle dress. Colette Patterns are some of my favorite to sew. They are everything I want in a pattern; vintage inspired, yet contemporary, stylish, cute and unique. They come in beginner, intermediate and advanced patterns. I have only attempted the beginner’s patterns so far, but I have found them all to have easy to understand directions. With each new project, and the handbook open to the chapter on fit, I have been getting better and better…

    Airstream Cushion Covers

When my friend Ali, owner of the amazing Idol Airstream Salon, asked me to sew cushion covers for her salon, that (like the name suggests) resides in an Airstream trailer in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, I said hell yeah! I have long had an affinity for Airstreams and thought at one point that I would someday own one myself. I simply adore Ali and she has been my hairdresser for years. Ali has great taste to boot, so once she showed me the fabric she had picked out, I knew this would be a fun project. After making my Meringue skirt with piping, and three dog beds for Wyatt, I…
