Hetty Cardigan- A Blue Sweater for a Blue State
Happy post Thanksgiving weekend! Hope you all had a good one. I spent Thanksgiving day with friends, talking about how especially thankful we are (post-election) to have each other and to live in our little progressive bubble of the Pacific Northwest. I probably shouldn’t say “progressive bubble” and not say that we also talked about how we can’t be content to live in a bubble anymore and how it’s time for action. By saying that, it probably goes without saying that I voted for Hillary and the next day cried all day and started questioning everything. Like how almost half of the country could vote for a racist, misogynist, homophobic, xenophobic person like Trump and what that…

Holiday Gift Idea- Quilted Potholders!
Every year, I post something holiday gift related. This year, I have another fun and easy handmade gift idea for you: quilted potholders! I have made quite a few of these for friends, family, craft sales and myself. I have a very well-loved (i.e. a little food stained) potholder in my kitchen that I use everyday, so these potholders are pretty and functional! These potholders are quilted, have a pocket and loop and are finished with binding. Since the way I do the binding is best explained visually, I’ve included a couple of videos for this tutorial. Part 1 shows how I do the quilting and has tips for marking lines, using a walker foot…

Geometric Print Staple Dress
Hello! I guess it’s time for my monthly post. I made this dress back in July and I CAN believe that I have not blogged about it yet, because I had a very busy Summer. There were weddings and going away parties, then my ukulele classes started up again. Also, my new job continues to keep me as busy as ever. I CAN’T believe I haven’t blogged about this dress yet, because I love it so much and have worn it A LOT. I think I had worn it 3 times already before I even took photos in it and I have continued to wear it about once a week ever since. Pattern- April Rhodes Staple Dress purchased from Nido, when I…

Porch Swing Cushions
Remember my porch swing from my garden tour post? I finally made the cushions that I’d been wanting make! Details- Pillow Pattern– I made the pillows the way I always make them (my tutorial is here), except this time the pillow were 20 inches instead of 18 inches. Cushion Cover Pattern– I made the cushion covers the same way I made the airstream cushion covers. Fabric– I got the umbrella fabric for free. It was a heavier weight home decor cotton, so it was perfect for this project. I didn’t have enough of it for the cushions and the pillows, so the pillows and cushion are navy blue on the opposite sides. I bought…

Simply Sewing Magazine Feature
I have been reading Tilly and Buttons, since I started sewing clothes a few years ago and have watched her publish a book and be on the Great British Sewing Bee. She’s a sewing celeb in the online sewing world and I am a big fan. I discovered Madalynne’s blog more recently, but was so impressed with her beautiful photos and wonderful content. She specializes in bra-making, which I have yet to delve into, but I know where I’ll go for info when I do. Deborah of the blog DFabrication is new to me, but apparently she was on the 3rd season of the Great British Sewing Bee. I need to…

Colette Patterns Moneta “Kentucky Derby” Dress
I recently made my first Colette Patterns Moneta dress and I can see why the blogisphere is abuzz about it. I made mine out of this fun “horse and jockey” vintage knit fabric that was in my stash (courtesy of Flower). It still had the dollar price tag on it from Goodwill. I made version 1 with the roll collar from the Moneta extras pdf. I had used an extra pocket design for Matt’s Negroni shirt, so again, you gotta love Colette Patterns for all the extras you get. Participating in the Wardrobe Architect exercises this year, has already helped me pinpoint that I need, and want, more knits in my wardrobe. Making this dress only…

Gray Cabled Mitts
I would think that no one wants to read about hand knit winter wear in the middle of April, if my knitting night wasn’t still packed full of knitters every week. Apparently, knitting is a year round activity. So I won’t apologize for sharing my gray cabled mitts (that I finished in February) with you now. The pattern was another freebie from Ravelry: One Cabled Mitts. I chose this pattern so that I could practice knitting cables before starting my Owl Sweater. I had been told that knitting cables was easy, but I didn’t believe it until I tried it. These mitts were good practice for knitting cables and it did…

Robot Dog Sweater
The pattern is the “Robo Dog Coat” from the book Knits of Tomorrow: Toys and Accessories for your Retro-Future Needs and was originally knit for my mother’s dog Mickey. Sadly, Mickey passed away before I was able to finish it, but I was able to give it to an adorable little Dachshund mix named Junebug and it fits her perfectly! All the details are on my Ravelry page, but the yarn I used was the Berocco DK Solids and I only needed one skein of each color. I cast on for the medium size which had 4 repeats of the chart (4 robot dogs total). I tried several different ways of holding the yarn for this…
