Rake and Make is two!
On this day, two years ago, after years of stalling, hemming and hawing over the name, and then finally landing on a name and getting a logo made, I made my first post to Rake and Make. I still haven’t found the time to post more than once a week (and sometimes less), so I haven’t even hit 100 posts yet. This blog is still a baby! Where my blog may lack in quantity, I think I make up for it in quality. I don’t post, just to post. I write when I have some knowledge or a finished project to share, so I feel good about that. Looking back…

Work in Progress- Miette Cardigan
I am thrilled that I have gotten this far knitting my Miette cardigan by Andi Satterlund. I had been told, by some of my blogging buds, that the Miette was a good beginner’s sweater, but when I looked at the pattern it was like Greek to me. I never would have been able to get started without the help of the lovely ladies of Seattle Yarn‘s knitting night. In one evening, I learned all the stitches I needed to get going and I was on my way. Okay, that is not entirely true, I had to knit the first two rows, three times, before I got it right, but then I was on…

Blogcademy Handwarmers
So it may seem like I didn’t knit anything for a long time and then just jumped to knitting the Miette Sweater. Well I did kind of jump from scarves and wristbands, skipping over socks and hats, and go to straight knitting a sweater. There was some knitting in between though, but it was for gifts, so it was a secret! Now that they are finished, delivered and received, I can finally blog about the three pairs of handwarmers (with the Blogcademy logo on them) that I made as thank you gift for the Blogcademy headmistresses, Shauna, Gala and Kat. If you are unfamiliar with what the Blogcademy is, you…

2014 Goals
New year, new goals! So here goes… GARDENING- Herb Garden- The area of my garden that I allotted for growing herbs has never been ideal. It was more of an afterthought, shoved into a dark corner, that was the only space I had left. Last year, Matt removed a tree that was an invasive, opening up the herb garden space and providing a lot more light. Matt’s going to own the herb garden this year, which will be great, and then I can focus on the rest. He already has plans for building boxes and has been planning out what herbs he wants to grow. It’ll be nice to finally have…

Rake and Make- now with video!
I have so much to learn about video and look wackadoo in this one, but as I am always saying, if you wait for everything to be perfect, nothing will ever get done. I just wanted to jump in, see how my new camera works and get something posted, so here it is! Not saying “Um” is really hard. I felt like I had to talk really slowly and think about what I was saying, so I will be practicing that. I have much to learn in regards to color, audio (I can already tell I probably need any auxiliary mic), editing, exporting/compressing, players/embedding and more, but it will be…

2013 Year in Review
Well, 2013 is over. Following on the heels of a previous rough year, 2013 was a year of serious ups and downs and it started at the very bottom. I began last year, in the ER with my mom, which set in motion a chain of difficult life changing events for our whole family. Still exhausted from 2012, it was challenging to stay positive last year. I could recite a whole litany of clichés here, like “whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” or “it’s always darkest before the dawn”. Maybe it’s easy to say those things when times are tough, because they make us feel better and it’s hard to…

My First Quilt!
I have always been intrigued by handmade quilts. I know they can be very time-consuming to make, but I have seen hand-stitched quilts made by friends’ mothers and grandmothers and that is exactly why they are so special. A quilt can be an heirloom and a work of art at the same time. Recently, I took the quilting series at Stitch and Sew Studio (part of the West Seattle Fabric Company) and I just finished my first quilt! The quilts we made in class were all crib-sized, which made sense for beginners. Having completed my first quilt, I can see how bulky and cumbersome a bigger quilt could be to sew. And guess…

Merry Christmas from Rake and Make!
Happy Holidays everyone! We have spent the last couple of days doing all of my favorite things; visiting with family and friends, cuddling with the dogs, cooking, baking, eating, and sharing homemade food and gifts. I couldn’t ask for a better holiday. I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday as well!
