Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour

    July 6, 2012 / 4 Comments

Seattle Tilth’s Chicken Coop and Urban Farm tour is next Saturday, July 14th from 10am to 4pm and I am a host! There are over 50 urban farms on the tour that are showcasing veggie gardens, chickens, goats, bees and more! Buy your tickets from Brown Paper Tickets and get the map. Come see me and my garden and as many of the other gardens as you can! I have been a host and a participant (I tend to alternate years, so I can go see gardens too), so I can say it’s well worth it!

    Gardening… and life and death.

    June 27, 2012 / 4 Comments

Let me start by saying, my mom is alive and doing well. We did have a hospital scare last week, that had me fretting, missing work (and some blog posting) and thinking a lot about this new phase of life us mid to late thirty-somethings seem to be heading into. Mom and I, when I was around 12 or 13. My mom is 70 and has never been sick, not as long as I can remember anyway. So my whole family was very scared and worried when my mom landed in the ER and then PCU last week. I ended up with most of the week off as a result.…

Onion scape and radish salad with honey mustard vinaigrette and grilled pizza

    June 8, 2012 / 1 Comment

Did you know you could eat onion scapes? Do you know what an onion scape is? I didn’t until recently! I had heard of garlic scapes from Willi Galloway’s post on Diggin Food about them, but I always grow softneck garlic for braiding and I don’t think those get scapes on them. This is the first year I have grown onions, and I didn’t know they got scapes, so when they appeared, I did a quick internet search to see if I could eat them. Not only are they edible, but it sounds like it helps redirect energy to the root if you cut them off. Win win! Apparently, they are really good roasted,…

    Spring Garden Explosion

    June 1, 2012 / No Comments

I’m breaking the rules already. I tried to work in the garden and Charlie was so upset that I left him in the house, so I had to bring him outside for a little bit. I put a towel down for him and took his cone off for a minute. Look how much happier he looks! Charlie convalesces. I have been gardening for years now, but I am still amazed when stuff actually grows and when it seems to grow quickly. Everything has exploded in the garden recently! Take a look!

    Palette Challenge update: Crepe dress

    May 28, 2012 / No Comments

We’ve been having some pretty nice weather in Seattle lately, so I’ve been doing more gardening than sewing lately. My dog Charlie, is usually my garden helper. He likes to sit out in the garden with me while I work, or just roll on his back in the grass. He’s nine now and starting to get lumpy, as Labs tend to do. So we just had to have one of his bumps removed. Since Charlie is recovering and can’t really go outside much right now, I have a good excuse to stay inside and catch up on some sewing. Now Charlie is my sewing helper! My second project for the Colette…
